Chilean needle grass is a recent weed incursion into North Canterbury. Describe its life cycle and ecology and discuss ways to reduce its invasion into pastures Summary This search was undertaken to find published scientific literature on both the ecology and lifecycle of Chilean Needle Grass, the main results of this search are discussed in this literature review for PLSC 321. Some of the key results from this review are; Chilean Needle Grass occurs throughout New Zealand in small patches of infestation. The majority or â€Å"70%†of occurrences are in â€Å"improved pasture†. In New Zealand the potential spread of Chilean Needle Grass is massive with up to 15 million hectares falling under an optimally suitable climate, although currently less than 1% of this in infested. In Canterbury alone there is over 1.2 million hectares of productive land at risk of invasion by this grass. Chilean Needle Grass has the potential to be harmful to New Zealand’s pastoral farming systems, owing to its sharp barbed seeds which have the potential to penetrate an animal’s hide, resulting in fleece and carcase damage. The seeds of this invasive weed are not suited for dispersion by wind, but because of their barbed seeds, can be spread by attaching to the wool and hair of farm animals. So that the seeds only germinate in favourable conditions they rely on a â€Å"pasture gap detecting mechanism† and only germinate when they are exposed to enough light. A gothic novel is thought to be a novel of horrors and mysteries, it has a theme and a philosophy of the worlds evil, a representation of something supernatural and mysterious. Its plot is bound up with secret murders. There are various obvious characteristics of a gothic novel and I have to investigate each other them in detail to establish the genre of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Sir Arthur Connan Doyle was a qualified doctor of medicine. He published his first Sherlock Homes novel in Beetons Christmas Annual in 1887, when he was aged 27. Sherlock Homes stories were then published in The Strand with worldwide success. The Hound of the Baskervilles was published in 1902. This was after great public uproar when Holmes was killed off by Conan Doyle in The Final Solution Sherlock Holmes novels where primarily written in the detective genre but in The Hound of the Baskervilles Conan Doyle not only uses his practised method of detective writing, but also manages to incorporate many features of a gothic novel. The book is set in Baskerville Hall, a place surrounded in mystery. It is described when Sir Henry first sees his family home. In the fading light I could see that the centre was a heavy block of building from which a porch projected. The whole front was draped in ivy, with a patch clipped bare here and there where a window or a coat-of-arms broke through the dark veil. From this central bloke rose the twin towers, ancient, crenellated, and pierced with many loopholes. To right and left of the turrets where many more modern wings of black granite. A dim light shone through heavy mullioned windows, and from the high chimneys which rose from the steep, high angled roof there sprang a single black column of smoke. This is a description of the house on a dark, rain soaked evening when Sir Henry and Watson were weary after a long journey. This is the only description of the house in the whole book. I feel that this is a very dark description of the house, words like dark and black all portray the house as an evil one. This makes you think that something dark and black has happened at the house. You think it would be the perfect place for murder. Gothic novels are always set in a certain atmosphere of darkness with a moaning and howling wind. The Hound of the Baskervilles is no exception. When Sir Henry and Watson first arrive on the cold windswept night the moor is described as a Barren waste, the chilling wind, and the darkening sky Again Conan Doyle has described a negative view of the moor in the opening part of the book. This puts a sense of foreboding into the reader. Like a gothic novel it makes you think this  is part of the world where some great evil could take place. Holmes even says after studying a map of the area. The setting is a worthy one, if the devil did decide to have a hand in the affairs of men Not only does this build up the evil element of the setting but also makes the reader wonder if the murder was in fact supernatural. There are three characters that occur in the majority of gothic novels, A knave Stapleton, a young lady Miss Stapleton and a young man who is struggling with an evil Sir Henry. The first mention of Mr Stapleton is when Dr Mortimer is describing the case to Holmes and Watson. This reveals for the first time that the Hound it actually real and capable of killing. On this one and only sighting of the Hound Watson describes his feelings towards the Hound. Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish, be conceived than that dark form and savage face. This once and for all reveals the identity of the hound as the terrible beast that it really is. Like a detective novel the answer to the great mystery is revealed at the dÃÆ' ©nouement of the novel but this is also very much like a gothic novel where there is usually a mystery which runs all the way through the book  and then revels itself at the dÃÆ' ©nouement. therefore this characteristics isnt as useful to use in trying to distinguish the genre of The Hound of the Baskervilles because it is a characteristics which crosses genres. The story for a Gothic Novel is usually introduced very early in the novel. The story, which is the basis for the mystery, is sometimes taken from an ancient manuscript, like The Hound of the Baskervilles. Also like The Hound of the Baskervilles Connan Doyle has used Mortimer telling Holmes and Watson the story and an introduction to the novel. Dr Mortimer comes to see Holmes and tells him the story of Sir Charless death and the whole ancient story surrounding the Hound. He tells of Sir Hugos death and how the Hound came to being. I think that this is a very good way to set up a novel because the reader can immediately start to place together their own theories and what has happened. It is also an easy way to quickly get across background information to the reader. In conclusion I feel that The Hound of the Baskervilles manages to for fill many characteristics of a gothic novel, it has naves, heroines, castles and most of all a deep sense of evil, but it is fundamentally a detective novel. Connan Doyle has written many books it the detective genre using Sherlock Holmes before. I think this book it just another slant on the detective genre. It includes murders and mysteries but these would be equally and home in both genres. I feel Connan Doyles biggest swing towards a gothic novel is his setting for the novel. Setting it on a barren wasteland with swirling mists and dangerous moor land is a fundamental characteristic of a gothic novel and Connan Doyle achieves this feel perfectly.

Similarities Between the Scottsboro Boys and Tom Robinson Essay There are many similarities between the Scottsboro trial and the trial of Tom Robinson in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. â€Å"No crime in American history—let alone a crime that never occurred—produced as many trials, convictions, reversals, and retrials as did an alleged gang rape of two white girls by nine black teenagers on a Southern railroad freight run on March 25, 1931† (Linder 1). The author of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee, was a young girl during the Scottsboro trial and based the trial of Tom Robinson in her novel off of the Scottsboro trial of 1931. The three main similarities between the Scottsboro trial and the trial of Tom Robinson are the geographic settings, the portrayal of racism, and the specifics of the court cases. The geographic settings in both cases are in Alabama. Tom Robinson’s trials took place in Maycomb, Alabama; the Scottsboro trials took place in Scottsboro, Alabama. Both cases were during the Great Depression and in the 1930s. Such was the backdrop of Harper Lee’s childhood when the Scottsboro case would have left such an impression. Lee wrote her novel with many similarities of her life as a child, the setting of the novel and the setting of the Scottsboro trial share similarities. This quote was stated by Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird in the court and he is stating the beliefs of most people in the south during the Great Depression. These trials took place during a time of segregation and racism so most people took the side of the white women. Both of the juries and judges for these trials were white. Because of this, the accused had no chance of getting equal treatment or justice. The last and most important similarity between the Tom Robinson trial and the Scottsboro trial is the similarities within the court. The similarities within the courts are the most important similarities between the Tom Robinson trial and the Scottsboro trial. All of the accused African Americans were found guilty in both cases. â€Å" A jury never looks at a defendant it has convicted, and when this jury came in, not one of them looked at Tom Robinson. The foreman handed a piece of paper to Mr. Tate who handed to the clerk who handed it to the judge . . . I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘Guilty . . . guilty . . . guilty . . . uilty . . . ’† (Lee 211). This quote is from To Kill a Mockingbird when Scout and Jem were waiting for the verdict of the jury. In both cases the trials were extremely long and both cases were false charges against African Americans during the 1930s by lower class Caucasians. Atticus Finch, of To Kill a Mockingbird, and real-life attorney Samuel Leibowitz both defended the black accused victims. The trial of the Scottsboro boys and the trial of Tom Robi nson in To Kill a Mockingbird share many similarities. The three main similarities are the geographic settings, the portrayal of racism, and the certain specifics of the court cases. Callaway Golf Company

Callaway Golf Company (CGC) Harvard Business School Case Study Ely Callaway had a vision, â€Å"If we make a truly more satisfying product for the average golfer, not the professionals, and make it pleasingly different from the competition, the company would be successful† (Lal & Prescott, 2011, p. 1). Key factors that led to Callaway’s success included his vision, his understanding of consumer behavior, his product variety, and his ability to build a premium brand. Furthermore, the company’s relationship with its retail partners, the company’s new product development, and the company’s marketing strategy were key contributors to Callaway Golf Company’s success between 1988 and 1997. Callaway understood the competitive nature of the game and the competitive nature of the consumers. Golfers were consumers driven by social factors such as reference groups. According to Kotler and Keller (2009), â€Å"Reference groups consist of all groups that have a direct (face-to-face) or indirect influence on a person’s attitude or behavior† (p. 8). Reference groups expose people to new behaviors and lifestyles, influence attitudes and self-concepts, and create pressures for conformity that affect product and brand choices. Because Callaway understood the behaviors of his target market, he was able to strategically introduce new products that offered more satisfaction than the former products. With product modification , managers try to stimulate sales by improving quality, features, and style (p. 185). Callaway understood each product’s life cycle and introduced new products every two years. He discovered that after two years, the sales and prices typically declined (Lal and Prescott, 2000, p. 4), causing him to continually make his own products obsolete. However, this business process solidified the consumer’s expectation that Callaway Golf Company would always deliver a high quality product, a value-delivery system successfully established by the company. The Callaway brand was strong, therefore, giving the company marketing advantages such as improved perceptions of product performance, greater loyalty, less vulnerability to competitive marketing actions and marketing crises, larger margins, greater trade cooperation and additional brand extensions (Kotler and Keller, 2009, p. 131). There was consistent brand reinforcement with every product as Callaway’s marketing methods always conveyed what the brand represented, what core benefits it supplied, and what needs it satisfied. Additionally, Callaway conveyed how the brand made superior products that were strong, favorable, and unique. Various consumer spending and golfing behaviors left Callaway no choice but to change his marketing strategies. Callaway realized they could not depend on their 1982 original marketing strategy. Callaway believed there was no brand loyalty when it came to golfers. The bottom line was that golfers tend to purchase golf clubs they think will improve their game and will often blame the golf equipment for their lack of skill (Lal and Prescott, 2000, p. 4). Callaway knew their products had to be unique. Callaway also knew as the popularity of the game increased, golf equipment had to also increase in purpose and design. In 1998, Callaway experienced a decline in profits. The company lost $27 million because sales dropped 17%. Consequently, Ely Callaway realized he would have to change the way his company had been doing business. He refocused Calloway Golf Company’s â€Å". . . retail channels, new-product development, and marketing strategies† (p. 1). One force that drove Callaway to continuously change his strategy was the life span of the golf equipment. Callaway was quick at determining whether a product was a money maker or not. He measured the profit growth of a product within the first two years the product was launched. If sales decreased within the first two years, the product design was redesigned and â€Å"improved. † This could possibly lead to excessive inventories of one product and shortage of another. Through evaluation and control methods, Callaway was able to make the best product marketing decisions for the bottom line. Annual plan controls helped determine if the new product results were being achieved. Profitability controls determined if the new product was making or losing money. Efficiency controls balanced the spending and marketing expenditures. Strategic controls confirmed whether the company was targeting the best opportunities with the retailers, media, and advertising (Kotler-Keller, 2009, p. 331-333). Richard Helmstetter, vice president and chief of new products, joined Callaway Hickory Stick, Inc. in 1986. He transformed CGC â€Å". . . from a niche producer to an innovation powerhouse. . . † (Lal and Prescott, 2000, p. 2). Helmstetter viewed research and development differently than others in the industry. He challenged the scientists, engineers, and golfers he had hired to answer questions like â€Å"Where does backspin come from? † and â€Å"Why does a shot on the club toe hook left instead of right? † (p. 2). Helmstetter was correct in believing that by answering these types of questions the company would create better clubs. New product innovations included the development of the S2H2 (short, straight, hollow, hosel) model which redistributed the weight of the hosel. This allowed the weight to be better utilized elsewhere in the club. Following the S2H2 model was the development of the Big Bertha. It was a club with a bigger club head. The larger head allowed for fewer mishit shots and a better drive. This allowed the average player to have a better experience when playing, which led to loyalty to Callaway, despite the cost. Callaway found it challenging being caught in the middle of a changing marketing communication environment. Callaway had to take a deep look at the company’s marketing communication mix and decide if it was still effective. The marketing communication mix includes: advertising, sales promotion, events and experiences, public relations and publicity, direct marketing, interactive marketing, word-of-mouth marketing, and personal selling (Kotler-Keller, 2009, pp. 275-276). Callaway Golf Company did very little advertising. Callaway felt that word of mouth was the best way to promote his clubs Word of mouth marketing was what golfers used excessively. Whether a golfer wanted the latest, greatest style of club or testified to the improvement of a stroke due to the club, word of mouth marketing was huge amongst golfers because of the amount of time golfers spent with each other during a round of golf. Callaway knew that most non-professional golfers played in foursomes and would give live demonstrations each time they played. Furthermore, he built a premium product and recruited professional golfers who were the leaders in the sport to promote his products. These endorsements validated the products quality and superior technology. The professional golfers â€Å"not under contractual obligations† used Callaway products because of the performance enhancement the clubs provided. Eli Callaway knew his company had enjoyed many years of positive growth and he knows that many more years of positive growth lay ahead. Additionally, he knew that he would always be faced with decisions concerning what products to develop, what accounts need to be closed, what retail relationships should be developed, and what marketing strategy should be employed. â€Å"When asked if CGC could stay ahead of the competition, he said, citing Newton’s first law of motion, ‘No problem. A Guide to Using MLA Citations A Guide to Using MLA Citations MLA referencing is common in the humanities. And if you are studying on a literature or language-based course, you may need to use MLA citations in your written work. To help you get this right, then, we have prepared a guide to using MLA citations in an essay. This will cover basic citations, citing multiple authors, and other tricky situations. 1. Basic MLA Citations Basic MLA citations use an author surname and a page number in brackets. Typically, you would give this before end punctuation: Bad news travels fast (Hawkins 201). Here, for example, the citation points to page 201 of a source by Hawkins. You would then give the full source details in the list. The main variation on this format occurs when you name an author in the text: Hawkins claims that bad news â€Å"travels fast† (201). As shown here, when the author’s name appears in the text, there is no need to repeat it in the citation. Instead, just give the page number after the quote. 2. Citing Sources with Multiple Authors When a source has two authors, name both in the in-text citation, using â€Å"and† as a connector (not the ampersand symbol): The exact speed of bad news is a mystery (Ptaszynski and Schreiber 14). Here, for example, we’re citing page 14 of a text by Ptaszynski and Schreiber. However, for sources with three or more authors, you should use the first name plus â€Å"et al.† in citations: Harkin et al. argue that good news is equally fast (101). â€Å"Et al.† here means â€Å"and others,† showing the reader you have left some names out. The same rule applies if a source has three or more editors or translators in the list. 3. Citing More than One Author with the Same Surname To cite more than one author with the same surname, you will need to adapt your citations. In MLA referencing, this means giving a first initial: News moves slower in water (A. Smith 32) than in air, but it moves much faster in a vacuum (Z. Smith 412-414). In the list, however, you should give the authors’ full first names and surnames as usual. 4. Citing Multiple Works by the Same Author Rather than using a year of publication to distinguish between citations of sources by the same author, MLA referencing uses the source title in place of the author’s name. For example, imagine that an author called Hawkins had written both a book called A History of Bad News and an article called â€Å"The Pace of News: A Comparative Study of Communicative Speed.† To cite both in the same document, we would need to include their titles in the citations: Bad news travels fast (Hawkins, A History of Bad News 201). Its speed seems to be increasing, too (Hawkins, â€Å"The Pace of News† 1136). We can learn two things about using titles in MLA citations from the examples above. In particular, you should always: Format titles according to the source type (e.g., italics for books and quote marks for shorter pieces such as articles). Shorten long titles (e.g., changing â€Å"The Pace of News: A Comparative Study of Communicative Speed† to just â€Å"The Pace of News†). In the list, meanwhile, you should organize sources by the same author alphabetically by title. In addition, use three hyphens in place of the author’s name for each entry after the first: Hawkins, Justin. A History of Bad News. All along, Ali’s aim is to have Soraya divorce him so that he can marry a younger wife. Ali has gone ahead and made a deal with the girl’s father who has assured him that if he is able to save him from execution, he will have his young daughter’s hand in marriage (Iran on death penalty, 2013). The village Mullah equally as treacherous and corrupt as Ali tries to seek sexual favors from Soraya under the pretence that he will take care of her and her children. Soon Ali, the village Mullah and the mayor convince Zahra to talk to Soraya so that she can work for a particular widower. Soraya agrees to work but for a fee. Using threats and duplicity, Ali and the village Mullah eventually, manage to manipulate the widower into backing their story that Soraya has committed zinah. According to Sharia, the burden of proof that a person has committed zinah is usually hard and only the widower could have secured it in the case of Soraya (The Koran and adultery, 2006). Soon a rumor is rife that Soraya is unfaithful to Ali and has committed zinah. As the story unfolds, Ali beats up Soraya drugging her through the streets claiming that she is an adulterous woman.
